Ethan Hawke has made a bit of a comeback in recent years, with solid performances in films such as “The Purge”, “Sinister”, “Before Midnight” and the recently acclaimed “Boyhood”. Now he’s re-teaming with the Spierig Brothers (Daybreakers) for new time travel thriller Predestination, and I’m thinking that we could be in for something cool with this one.
An official synopsis has just been released, and Predestination appears to be a very original piece of work: “In mid-’70s New York, a man in a fedora slips into an office building’s boiler room, carrying a mysterious briefcase. He uncovers a bomb, and is attacked while struggling to deactivate it. He succeeds — almost. Horribly disfigured, he’s transported to his agency’s headquarters where he receives a new face. He’s a temporal agent, traveling back and forth through time, altering history, and his assignment — thwart the mass murder perpetrated by the so-called ‘Fizzle Bomber’ — continues. New face, new place. Now he’s undercover as a bartender. He falls into conversation with a tough yet androgynous customer. There’s something off about the guy, who offers to enlighten the agent with ‘the best story you ever heard’.”
The film is an adaption of ‘All You Zombies’ by noted science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein, and looks to present a very original flip on the time travel genre. While Hawke is the obvious drawcard, it appears that newcomer Sarah Snook could turn out to be the real star of the movie. The film is rocking an awesome trailer, and I’m feeling that we could have a new gem on our hands with this one.
While Sony has distribution rights there is still no set release date at this point, but Predestination is definitely one to keep an eye on.
