Considering that E.J. James’ first foray into novel writing became the fastest-selling paperback of all time, not to mention the ‘it’ topic of discussion for fans, feminists, haters and supporters of the BDSM community, it came as no shock that Universal Pictures acquired the rights to adapt the erotic novel into a feature-length film.
We know what plenty of the critics were thinking. In fact, they often passionately voiced these opinions online, to friends over dinner or work colleagues by the water cooler. Whether they thought the novel’s heroine was too weak, the prose terrible or, for some reason, were one of the readers who took great offence to how it ‘inaccurately’ portrayed the world of BDSM, they were likely to have laughed-out-loud at the thought of a ‘mommy porn’ book being turned into a film for mainstream audiences. However, making fun of the Fifty Shades of Grey film is much like making fun of the fat kid you knew as a child – all too easy and a super low blow. To the critics I say this: remember when you saw that same ugly duckling years later, and they turned super hot, in-demand and mega successful? Well it doesn’t take a genius to predict the same future for the big-screen adaption.
After months of casting rumours and announcements, as well as soaring amounts of speculation as to how on earth the film would portray the sex scenes in a masses-friendly way, whilst remaining true to the novel, a trailer has finally been released…and it looks pretty damn good.
Starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, Fifty Shades of Grey follows the journey of a young graduate called Anastasia Steel (Johnson), who becomes entangled in more ways than one with a successful billionaire named Christian Grey (Dornan). What follows is a vivid foray into a world of sexual intrigue, which has massive effects on the young lovers.
From the get-go, the trailer reveals an intense chemistry between the two co-stars, and provides us with enough satisfaction that director Sam Taylor-Johnson (“Nowhere Boy”) has sought to stay true to the novel. Whilst it would be easy to turn the movie into something extremely cheesy and overly-romanticised, from what we’ve seen, the film will explore the difficulties Christian faces after allowing someone he cares for break down the barriers he’s worked so hard to build, whilst showing how Anastasia handles her sexual awakening. From the cold and sterile reception of Grey Enterprises to the famous Red Room, the production team looks to have nailed every detail from the books. A special shout-out goes to the person who picked the low-hung jeans worn by Dornan in the trailer…god damn. Excuse me while I go take a cold shower.
Fifty Shades of Grey also stars Luke Grimes, Eloise Mumford, Marcia Gay Hardy, Rito Ora, Max Martini and Jennifer Ehle. The film will be released on Valentine’s Day 2015. If you haven’t yet seen the incredible trailer, check it out below.
