Bradley Cooper has long made his intentions known to take on the role of legendary US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in a feature film. Thanks to the actor’s passion, we will soon be seeing the result of his collaboration with legendary director Clint Eastwood for American Sniper.
U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname “Legend”. However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. Chris also faces a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq. But upon returning to his wife, Taya Renae Kyle (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.
The brand new trailer is grippingly tense intercutting one of Kyle’s missions with snaps of his family life. The tension serves as to what audiences are likely to see when the film opens next year. Audiences will also be seeing Cooper at his best, as he has carried the responsibility of Chris Kyle’s story (who was tragically killed in 2013) since 2012, going through several directors until he began his collaboration with Eastwood.
Speaking to USA Today recently Cooper talked about the significance of both the film’s story, and the man behind it. ‘I had to do right by him and his family, there was really no choice. You’re sitting across the dining-room talking to this person’s father and mother. And his children and wife are there. And he’s passed away. Knowing that they are putting all of their stories in your hands and the responsibility of that, it’s actually unique.’
Cooper even got to talk to Kyle before his untimely death, a conversation that has stayed with him. ‘Thank god I got to talk to him once on the phone. It was a very quick conversation. But I did tell him how serious I was about making this movie. And he should just know that whatever fears he had about Hollywood, to just put them aside and trust me. That I was going to do everything I could to tell this story.’
From the looks of this first trailer, Cooper has made good on his promise to Chris Kyle and his family, as American Sniper looks to be an extremely compelling tale of a man both warrior, husband and father. Cooper looks so convincing in the role that we wouldn’t be surprised if another Oscar nomination came his way.
American Sniper will be released January 22.
