It’s been an exciting time this year at CinemaCon, and we can now reveal the first look at Johnny Depp as notorious Boston ganglord Whitey Buldger in true life crime saga Black Mass.
The new image showcases Depp’s James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, a gangland overlord who controlled and terrorized the city of South Boston during the 1970s and 1980s, and who gripping a semi-automatic rifle appears to have just gunned down another unfortunate soul to have crossed him. Depp’s resemblence to the real life Bulger is uncanny, and there were reports of extra’s who had known Bulger in real life who were ‘physically unnerved’ by Depp’s presence while on set.
Black Mass will chronicle Bulger’s rise to power as a gangster, before he became a confidential informant to the FBI, through a relationship with childhood friend John Connelly (Joel Edgarton), which allowed Bulger to continue his illegal enterprises while facing protection. But in the early 90s the corruption became overwhelming, and Bulger fled in 1994, before being apprehended in 2o11.
Black Mass is shaping up to be a blood soaked, faith infused tale of one man’s ruthless ascent to power, and will be released in cinemas on September 17.
