The brutality of the Appalachian wilderness, and the strength and ferocity to survive is played out in the first trailer for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant.
Based on the incredible true life tale of 19th century fur trapper Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio), a mountain man who is mauled by a bear while on a hunting expedition, and who is then robbed and left to die by his companions (Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, Lukas Hass and Domhnall Gleeson). But Glass survives, and sets out to get revenge on the men who betrayed him.
From this first trailer, The Revenant shows an uncompromising vision of a brutal frontier life, and the extent that man will go to survive it. While little dialogue is spoken, a fearsome kinetic energy and dark atmosphere propel this film forward with what appear to be compelling performances by DiCaprio and Hardy.
The Revenant is sure to be 2016’s most uncompromising film, and we could very much end up seeing DiCaprio with another nomination for Best Actor from the Academy. The film is set for release on January 7, 2016.
