Directer F. Gary Grey brings the raw passion of legendary rap group N.W.A. to the big screen in Straight Outta Compton — a rousing, kinetic, beat-filled biopic that holds nothing back.

5. Notable Hip-Hop Cameos

Straight Outta Compton isn’t just the story of N.W.A’s rise to fame, but also the rise of an entire genre, and this leaves plenty of room for some very clever appearances for notable hip hop legends including street poet Tupac Shakur, musical mogul gangster Suge Knight, and a young man by the name of Snoop Dog, who has a talent for spitballing rhymes.

4. Street History

Straight Outta Compton doesn’t just play as music biopic, but also a snapshot of a very volatile time in American history, and includes notable incidents like the Rodney King beating and the Watts riots. Seeing these events retold on the big screen is particularly compelling given the recent horrors in Ferguson. The scenes elevate Straight Outta Compton and leave an indelible impression.

3. Dreams and Danger

Easy-E, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre lived the rap star dream, and enjoyed the swag that came with it. High roller mansions, classic American low rider cars, and beautiful women all find their way up on screen. But it’s not all smooth sailing, as we are shown the many downsides to the gangster lifestyle, whether it be through Suge Knight’s presence and his affiliation with the Bloods, or the death of Dr. Dre’s brother.

2. Dramatic Vision

The story of N.W.A is one of enormous scope and scale, and a director with real vision, was needed. Enter F. Gary Grey. With a passion for the source material, and a fine eye for detail, Grey has created a movie that is equal parts an alternate American history tale as it is a music biopic.

1. The Scene Stealers

Straight Outta Compton ultimately belongs to the talent of its inspiring new lead stars including Ice Cube’s own son O’Shea Jackson Jr, along with Corey Hawkins and the breathtaking Jason Miller. All three young performers give themselves completely to their roles, and theirs stars will no doubt continue to rise in the future.

Straight Outta Compton is a phenomenal movie experience that introduces some exceptionally promising dramatic talent to the screen, and perfectly charts a definitive time in musical history. A definite must watch.
