Christmas is fast approaching, but in director Michael Dougherty’s Krampus, it’s not going to be a very jolly time.
Dougherty has released three brand new images from the upcoming Christmas themed horror-comedy which follows Max (Emjay Anthony), a kid around the age when Santa’s magic still has a grip on the imagination…but only just. When his dysfunctional family gathers for Christmas, Max is given even more reason to stop believing. Things go from bad to worse when a blizzard hits the neighbourhood signaling that the Krampus is on his way, ready to punish those who’ve ended up on the naughty list.
Dougherty opened up about the film in an interview with USA Today citing the actual mythical lore behind the Krampus. “It’s one thing to be terrified or enthralled when you’re watching a film. To then leave the cinema and realize it’s based on real myths and legends only makes it sink in even deeper.”
Daughtery also talked about how Krampus is not your typical movie monster, and that his presence presents new scares for audiences.
“He’s not Freddy or Jason or Leatherface, this unstoppable monster that kicks down your door and rampages and grabs you,” he says. “If you study the myth, there’s something darkly playful about him. He’s having a good time doing what he does and he enjoys the cat-and-mouse aspect of it.”
Krampus is set to open in cinemas on December 3.
