Awards season is upon us and while we eagerly anticipate soon-to-be viral moments from hosts like Ricky Gervais and Chris Rock, the past year’s biggest stars are left nervously awaiting nomination announcements for iconic ceremonies like the Academy Awards and the BAFTAs.
For a few young actors, today has brought some terrific news that should help them rest a little easier. The first nominations for this year’s BAFTA awards have just been revealed, specifically for the Rising Star award, which recognises up and comers in the industry.
John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades Of Grey), Brie Larson (Room), and Bel Powley (Diary Of A Teenage Girl) are the lucky five nominees and all very much deserving of the honour.
Previous winners have included Jack O’Connell, Will Poulter, Kirsten Stewart and Eva Green — big names who have each cemented their place in the film industry through memorable performances. While Boyege’a high profile performance in The Force Awakens has certainly turned heads, it’s Brie Larson’s role in Room that’s been earning the most praise and awards buzz. Many are predicting Oscar glory for the young actress, and given her moving performance in the touching drama, supporters could be spot on with their hunch.
The 69th British Academy Film Awards will take place on February 14 at the Royal Opera House in London. We’ll be sure to post the winners once they’re announced.
