I can’t stress this enough people: Nate Parker is THE next big thing.
The American writer, director and actor has built a steady resume of work over the years including a starring role Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Beyond the Lights, an excruciatingly underrated drama. He’s a leading man, and as it turns out, a jack of all trades.
In 2013, Parker became determined to play slave rebellion leader, Nat Turner, based on a screenplay he had started writing as early as 2009. After pouring his own money into the project and petitioning independent financiers to make up the $10 million budget, Parker got to work on what became this year’s stand-out at the Sundance Film Festival.
The trailer for The Birth of a Nation is now here, and I’m pleased to say, this is only the beginning for the world’s soon-to-be biggest star.
The Birth of a Nation tells the true story of Nathaniel “Nat” Turner, who was encouraged to study the Holy Bible and be a preacher to his fellow slaves. However, when Nat’s master decides to profit from his preaching skills and put him on an inter-county preaching tour, Nat starts to see the full extent of slavery and is moved to become a different kind of leader.
Also starring Armie Hammer, Gabrielle Union, Jackie Earle Haley and Aja Naomi King, The Birth of a Nation will be released in the US on October 7.
