What could be more unexpected than a successful game about angry birds?

A film about angry birds.

We may not have asked for it, but The Angry Birds Movie is here, and thanks to some loveable characters and a few hilarious gags, it’s all-but guaranteed to keep the kids entertained.

Though many hardcore players and fans of the game are on the mature side of life, The Angry Birds Movie is undoubtedly aimed at kids. That’s not to say the adults won’t have fun — plenty were chuckling in the theatre — but between the snot-flying bits and…well…more snot-flying bits, it felt slightly more suited for the wee ones sitting around me. However, older fans will appreciate the totally random but somehow fitting ode to the most recent X-Men film, not to mention Peter Dinklage’s hilarious Mighty Eagle.

Applause should also be given to the animators and screenwriter Jon Vitti, who crafted a strong and fast-moving story virtually out of thin air. Visually it was an impressive watch, helped along by some big name stars like Jason Sudeikis and Josh Gad, who embodied their respective characters perfectly.

For fans of the game, The Angry Birds Movie is a fun extension of the franchise, and for kids, it’s a fun time at the movies.
