Following the unprecedented success of Furious 7 last year, an eighth installment in the Fast and Furious franchise was a given. With Straight Outta Compton’s F. Gary Gray behind the camera, the gang is back for more hi-octane hijinks in the logically titled Fast 8.
Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Dom to his family, returns to lead his ragtag group of racers on another mission. With his best friend retired and his wife’s memory restored, Dom’s life appears to finally be in balance. That is, until a new one menace arrives in the form of…
Cipher (Charlize Theron). The big bad this time out, aside from a good line in vintage t-shirts, little is known so far, apart from the fact that she will get behind a wheel. Since the overriding theme of the Fast franchise is family, the safe bet would be that Cipher is another Shaw sibling. If that is the case, here’s hoping noted fan Helen Mirren can sign on as Mama Shaw for Fast 9 and then we can have the whole Shaw family for Fast 10. Game of Thrones’ Kristofer Hivju (who played wildling Tormund Giantsbane) will co-star as her henchman.
DSS Agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) will join him. With Brian O’Connor (the late Paul Walker) retired, Hobbs will probably take his place as the defacto co-leader of the team. Expect explosions, bullets, baby oil and plenty of eighties action hero one liners.
Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez) is back to full strength after she overcame her amnesia at the end of Furious 7. Expect her to kick plenty of ass and throw some withering put-downs at the rest of the crew.
Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson), the crew’s resident joker, will probably have to step up to the plate with another insane scheme which he will subsequently try to back out of. And he will probably use his motormouth to cause a distraction.
Tej Parker (Chris Bridges), the crew’s resident tech-head, will probably resume his playful rivalry with Roman, especially over the attention of their mutual object of attraction, Ramsey.
Sean Boswell (Lucas Black), the hero of Tokyo Drift, finally joins the rest of the fast family. The protege and friend of the late Han (Sung Kang), expect Boswell provide plenty of drifting antics to the film’s vehicular mayhem.
Elena Neves (Elsa Pataky) hasn’t been in action since bidding farewell to Dom at the end of Fast 6. She still hasn’t found the people who killed her husband, so possibly Fast 8 will see this dangling plot thread resolved.
Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel), Furious 7’s computer hacker returns. The series has been missing another strong female heroine on the team since Gal Gadot’s Giselle died in Fast 6. Hopefully Ramsey and Elena can step into that void.
Frank Petty (Kurt Russell), the secret agent known as Mr Nobody in the last film, returns. He will probably be the one giving Dom and his crew the details of their latest mission.
Scott Eastwood will be making his debut as an unnamed ‘law enforcement agent’. No details on who this character is, but he could be a member of Petty or Hobbs’s organisations who winds up joining the crew.
Finally, the wild card. Despite being jailed the world’s most insanely complicated prison at the end of Furious 7, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) will be back in some form to continue his crusade against the man who crippled his brother.
