Having been addicted to television since forever, we have a long list of nerd champions worthy of acknowledgment on this blessed day. However, in the interest of saving time, here are just a few favs from the small screen:
1. Xander Harris , Buffy the Vampire Slayer
We’ve always had a little crush on Xander (played by Nicholas Brendon). From witty, unassured teen to brave recruiter and slayer watcher, he really came into his own throughout the series.
2. Amy Farrah Fowler, The Big Bang Theory
We thought there couldn’t possibly be someone as arrogant, smart and oblivious to social norms as Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), but we we wrong. The moment Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) joined the Big Bang gang, we knew the writers had something special. Six years later and she’s still making us laugh/shake our heads in disbelief.
3. Seth Cohen, The O.C.
Californiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa *sings The O.C. theme song*
Everybody’s dream boyfriend in the early 2000s was Seth Cohen (Adam Brody). Why? He was sarcastic, adoringly self-deprecating, a talented artist, and his best friend (until the arrival of Ryan) was a toy horse named Captain Oats. Sure he was a bit of a mess, and that early Thanksgiving episode with Summer and Anna wasn’t his finest display of maturity but hey, we love him all the same.
4. Steve Urkel, Family Matters
When you think of mainstream society’s image of nerd, it’s safe to say Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) springs to mind. While this stereotypically bespeckled, suspender-wearing character was only meant to appear on Family Matters for one episode, he impressed so much that he’s now the most popular face associated with the hit series. What can we say? Some people just stick and Urkel is one character we’ll never shake.
5. Liz Lemon, 30 Rock
Played by series creator Tina Fey, Liz Lemon was a head writer by day and cheese lover by night. A fan of the Star Wars franchise and Heroes, she was socially awkward but a damn delight to watch.
6. Lisa Simpson, The Simpsons
Lisa Simpson (voiced by Yeardley Smith) is by far the smartest in her family, boasting a high IQ and some mad sax-playing skills. She often takes the moral high ground, stands up for herself and doesn’t take crap. Despite all of these amazing traits, it’s really Lisa’s good heart and kind nature that we adore.
7. Abed Nadir, Community
Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi) was an attendee of Greendale Community College and the best thing about Community. A pop-culture aficionado with a knack for directing, his many antics with best bud Troy (Donald Glover) were almost too much fun to watch. Abed was always a blunt and direct talker, but combined with his undeniably sweet personality, it was a winning combo.
8. Walter White, Breaking Bad
He mayyyyyy have taken his love for chemistry a bit far, but Walter White was still an undeniable, lovable science nerd deep down.
