In the competitive world of chess the queen has the power, and director Mira Nair (The Namesake, New York, I Love You) is set to introduce audiences to one of the most inspiring stories in world sporting history with Queen of Katwe.
This inspirational biopic follows the life of Phiona Mutesi, who grew up in the Ugandan slum of Katwe, and who lost her father at the age of three to AIDS. But in an extraordinary turn of events Phiona stumbles upon the game of chess, and discovers that she has a talent for it. Tutored by chess instructor Robert Katende (David Oyelowo), Phiona continues to train and eventually earns herself a spot at the 40th World Chess Olympiad.
In addition to introducing us to newcomer Madina Nalwanga, established Hollywood actors David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o also star in the film.
Queen of Katwe is set to premiere at TIFF on September 10, before it is released in cinemas on September 23.
