Families looking for a few hours of clean entertainment will certainly enjoy Chris Renaud and Yarrow Cheney’s The Secret Life of Pets, which takes an hilarious stab in the dark at what our fluffy, scaly and feathered friends get up to while we’re away.

Featuring an all-star voice cast that includes Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet, Jenny Slate, Kevin Hart, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Albert Brooks, Ellie Kemper, Steve Coogan and Hannibal Buress, the laughs were always going to come hard and fast. Writers Brian Lynch, Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio and the animators have created an array of adorable and unique creatures, from Bell’s tabby cat to Slate’s pomeranian, bringing plenty of “awwwwwww” moments.

While every actor is almost too perfectly cast as their screen spirit animal, none will have you laughing more than Kevin Hart as Snowball the rabbit, who has a bone or two to pick with humans. Constantly angry but always cute, this sinister critter is by far the film’s standout, particularly when he’s goading our two leads to offer more gory details on a story they made up to get in with Snowball’s motley crew.

Jenny Slate’s love-tortured ball of fluff is also fun to watch, and though good natured and even tempered, she’s a feisty and tough one to deal with when it comes to her man…who’s not really her man.

The Secret Life of Pets is the perfect fit for animal lovers after a relaxing escape. It’s got heart, a fun story and plenty of cute things to look at. What more could you want?
