Go, Go Power Rangers!

The first official teaser trailer for Dean Israelite’s (Project Almanac) re-imagining of the Power Rangers is here, and man does it look impressive!

Here’s the synopsis:

When trouble making high school students Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Trini and Zack stumble upon a mysterious alien object, they find themselves overcome with strange powers, and are chosen to save their town of Angel Grove and the rest of the world from the evil interstellar witch Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks).

Taking his cues from the original 1990s series, Israelite has cast a batch of fresh-faced newcomers in the film including Dacre Montgomery as Jason Lee Scott/The Red Ranger, Naomi Scott as Kimberly Hart/The Pink Ranger, RJ Cyler as Billy Cranston/The Blue Ranger, Becky G as Trini Kwan/The Yellow Ranger, and Ludi Lin as Zack Taylor/The Black Ranger.

In addition to the young cast, veteran actors Elizabeth Banks, Bill Hader and Bryan Cranston are also appearing. While Cranston and Hader will fight the good fight as Zordon and Alpha 5, Banks will be channeling a good deal of menace as the evil Rita Repulsa. While she only appears in the teaser for a moment, Banks’ Rita looks delectably wicked and is certain to make audiences uneasy with her otherworldly menace.

Israelite and his team appear to have done a great job at re-imagining the Power Rangers for a new generation. While this version of the Power Rangers appears a shade darker and decidedly more grown up, Israelite looks to have captured the spirit of the original series with five kids who stumble upon something bigger than themselves, and get the chance to be heroes. Based on the first teaser I’m excited to see more, and I have a feeling that Power Rangers could be one of 2017’s biggest films.

Power Rangers is set to be released in cinemas on March 23 in New Zealand and Australia and on March 24, 2017 in the US and UK.
