Michael Fassbender is about to discover just how intense the past can be in the epic action adventure film Assassin’s Creed, which has just released its final trailer.

Here’s the synopsis:

Fassbender stars as Callum Lynch, a criminal who is convicted of a crime and sentenced to death. But Lynch finds himself rescued by Abstergo Industries, a mysterious corporation that has links to the Templar Order. Forced to take part in the Animus Project, he begins to relive the memories of his ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha, a 15th century Assassin in the Spanish Inquisition. As Lynch begins to gain control over his new found abilities he soon realises that Abstergo Industries are not who they claim to be, and sets out to confront them with a vengeance.

Director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) has done an absolutely stunning job capturing the intensity of the Assassin’s Creed material, and the final trailer showcases some breathtaking action set pieces. Fassbender appears absolutely possessed as Aguilar, and decimates all enemies before him with some epic parkour moves. His dual performance as Callum/Aguilar will also provide some must-watch moments as the violence of the past finally catches up with him.

Fassbender’s co-star Marion Cotillard has plenty of villainous moments as well. Cotillard stars as Sophia Rikkin, the lead scientist on the Animus Project, and who sees Lynch as nothing more than a means to an end. The chemistry and antagonism shared between the two of them should light up the screen, and we can’t wait to see the fireworks.

Assassin’s Creed is a 2016 must watch, and will make its way into cinemas on December 21 in the US, January 1, 2017 in New Zealand and Australia, and January 6, 2017 in the UK.
