Fans of author Jay Asher will know all about his hit novel Thirteen Reasons Why, and soon a host of Netflix users worldwide will get to know his troubled characters in a highly anticipated small-screen adaptation.

13 Reasons Why comes from showrunners Brian Yorkey and Diana Son, as well as executive director Selena Gomez, and tells the story of Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette), whose classmate and crush, Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), committed suicide. Two weeks after her death, he finds a box his with name on it lying on his porch, which contains cassette tapes recorded by Hannah, explaining 13 reasons why she killed herself. Will he be one of them?

The first trailer offers more than your typical teen drama, and brings together a talented young cast to tell a rather macabre story. Watch the tense teaser for yourself below:

One name that may have caught your eye above was that of Selena Gomez’s. Though the singer and actress has worked extensively in film and TV since childhood, 13 Reasons Why is her first notable foray in producing, and it looks like she chose the right project.

13 Reasons Why will be released March 31 on Netflix.
