We’re just days away from the premiere of Ryan Murphy’s new anthology series, Feud: Bette and Joan, and now FX has released a new teaser to give fans a first look at what’s sure to be another hit for the channel.
Starring Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis and Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford, the series reveals the backstage battle that ensued when two of Hollywood’s forgotten stars teamed up to make Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
Speaking on the key differences between the two stars, Sarandon comments in the teaser, “they were very very different. Bette Davis always saw herself as a character actor, she didn’t see herself as beautiful. Joan Crawford was the most beautiful girl in the world, and wasn’t taken seriously.”
The paid famously feuded on the set of their movie, which came along during a time when both actresses were struggling for roles and desperate for a hit. “Just the nature of the business being as competitive as it is. There were a lot of powers that be that pitted them against one another,” says Lange.
Beyond the feud itself, the series will also delve into the sexism and ageism the two stars faced, which unfortunately, is still rampant in Hollywood. Stanley Tucci, who plays studio head Jack L. Warner in the series, comments that “we see so many of the same issues that women were going through then…they’re still going through now.”
Feud: Bette and Joan airs Sundays on FX.
