In just a few weeks, audiences will be reunited with their favourite MCU team with James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.
The first film set itself apart with its sense of humour, heart, outstanding soundtrack and the introduction of buff Chris Pratt. It was a blessing in every sense of the word, and with our excitement growing for round two by the minute, we thought it fitting to break down the things we can’t wait to see.
1. Michael Rooker’s stealing scenes as Yondu Udonta
Michael Rooker was a lot of fun to watch in Guardians of the Galaxy, playing up a mischievous and tough side that kept us wanting more. In an interview with Fandango, director James Gunn spoke highly of Rooker’s performance in the film, making it clear the actor is a major player in the emotional core. “I will say this about Michael Rooker, and this is no joke. He deserves an Academy Award nomination for this movie. He is amazing in the film, and he’s blowing people away. It’s such a deep, honest and truthful performance from him,” he commented. Consider us intrigued Gunn.
2. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) coming face to face with his father, Ego (Kurt Russell)
From what we’ve seen and heard, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be concentrating heavily on character relationships, particularly between Peter and his father Ego. Given Yondu’s assessment of Ego in the first film involved calling him a “jackass” it can be assumed that the reunion between biological father and son will be a complicated one. Given the enormity of Ego’s power and his sudden appearance in Peter’s life, we’d wager there’s an alternative motive there, and one that could have major consequences for Star-Lord.
3. Baby Groot’s evolution
In the first Guardians, the world fell in love with baby Groot faster than you can say ‘merchandise gold’, but what does his tiny stature mean for the character? In an interview with ScreenRant Gunn commented, “yeah he can kick some ass. He’s also an idiot. He’s a baby. He’s not very smart. So, he’s stupid.” It sounds like the character will be a bit more wild and unpredictable this time around, possibly a liability in many ways thanks to his naivety. How he develops in the movie, if at all, will be fun to watch, which is pretty incredible considering we’re talking about a tree.
4. Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) working side by side…sort of
They may be sisters, but love was nowhere to be found between Nebula and Gamora by the end of Guardians of the Galaxy. In the upcoming flick, it looks like the two will finally be getting down to the nitty gritty of their feud. “My character Nebula is dealing with a whole lot of stuff there – we see a whole new side to her. A much more human side, actually, where we understand how truly awful and difficult her daddy issues are,” Gillan commented in an interview with THR. Whether this will lead to any kind of resolution between Gamora and Nebula remains to be seen, but we’d wager the latter has something sinister up her sleeve.
5. The music!
This is a James Gunn production people, so you best believe we’re going to be paying just as much attention to the music as the storyline. From Jay and the Americans’ Come A Little Bit Closer to Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain, what we’ve heard so far sounds incredible. Music became a character in itself in the first film, so we’re expecting big things for the sequel.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will arrive in cinemas on April 27 in New Zealand and Australia, and on May 5 in the US and UK. Read more about the film and find the trailers here.
