It’s not often you get men of colour leading romantic comedies, something Hollywood needs to change asap.

While big rom com scripts might not be getting sent to men like Kumail Nanjiani, that didn’t stop the Silicon Valley actor from taking things into his own hands, with the help of someone very special.

The Big Sur is the latest romance flick gaining traction online, and was written by Nanjiani and his wife Emily V. Gordon. The film takes a hard yet comedic look at the couple’s real-life romance, which faced disapproval from Nanjiani’s Muslim family before the final blow: a mysterious illness that hit Emily.

Nanjiani plays himself opposite Zoe Kazan, who takes on the role of Emily, while Ray Romano and Holly Hunter play Emily’s parents. The first trailer has now been released, and is a charming, hilarious and surprising take on romance. Check it our below:

The Big Sick will be released on June 23 in the US.
