The release of Sony’s latest solo Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, is just around the corner, and it looks like the studio is already planning their next big project from the same universe of characters.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that The Revenant and Taboo star Tom Hardy is this close to signing on for Venom, while Santa Clarita Diet and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is said to be directing. The film is intended for an October 5, 2018 release.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Venom first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man series (#300, May 1988), and is a Symbiote, an extraterrestrial parasite that bonds with human hosts for survival. One of the most famous humans hosts was Eddie Brock, who was then able to enjoy enhanced powers as a result of the bonding.
In the comics, Brock was a disgraced reporter who blamed Spider-Man for what his life had become, and dedicated much of his time as a villain trying to kill the superhero. However, later appearances revealed Venom as a sort of antihero who tried to help innocent people.
Side note: Since Sony is exploring the Spider-verse, may we request an adaptation of Silk? Please!?
