2017 is tracking to be a busy year for Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldua. Not only does he have the impending release of season seven of Game of Thrones, but he’s also taken on the lead role in Ric Roman Waugh’s hard-hitting gang drama Shot Caller.

Here’s the synopsis:

When average guy Jacob Harlon (Coster-Waldua) is involved in a freak accident that leads to an unexpected tragedy he soon finds himself behind bars. Facing the violence of prison life he is drawn into the world of white supremacy prison gangs and eventually rises to be a feared gang leader. But his new life begins to threaten his old one, and he is forced into a choice of either remaining loyal to the gang or protecting his family.

Roman Waugh is quickly becoming the go-to director for realistic criminal stories with a stellar list of credits to his name including 2008’s Felon and 2013’s Snitch. Here he crafts another dark odyssey into the criminal underworld and Coster-Waldua appears totally game. His physical transformation from clean-cut Hollywood heartthrob to tatted-up brute is particularly impressive, and the film’s subject matter is clearly pushing him as a performer.

Matched alongside Coster-Waldua is an impressive supporting cast including Jon Bernthal and Jeffrey Donovan as fellow gang members who bring Harlon into their violent world.

The new trailer makes for a particularly intense watch, so check it out below:

Shot Caller will be released on August 18.
