Disney Animated Studios has finally revealed the voice behind its first Polynesian princess. At only 14 years old, Hawaiian native Auli’i Cravalho has been cast to voice the titular character of Moana, working alongside Dwayne Johnson who is voicing demi-god Maui. Take a look at the heartwarming video below to see the exact moment when a very excited Cravalho found out she had won the role.
Set 2000 years ago, the film takes places in the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania where a born navigator, Moana, sets sail in search of a fabled island. It’s during her journey that she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god, Maui.
Cravalho certainly looks to have worked hard for the role and appears thrilled to be voicing the soon-to-be iconic character. As the first Polynesian Disney princess Moana will hopefully strike a chord with young children and adults everywhere, particularly those whose cultures are woefully underrepresented in film.
Look out for Moana when the film reaches cinemas November 23, 2016.
