The first redband trailer for Shane Black’s The Nice Guys is here, and the noted writer/director is promising a hard-edged, sly comedy that literally packs a serious punch.
Set in Los Angeles in the mid 1970s, Russell Crowe stars as hired collector Jackson Healey who is forced to team up with Ryan Gosling’s washed-up private investigator Holland March to find the daughter of LA’s District Attorney (Kim Basinger), who has gone missing, and which leads them into a deadly showdown with the Mafia.
Black has long been the master of the buddy cop genre, popularising it with 1987’s classic Lethal Weapon. The Nice Guys looks to follow in this tradition, although completely throwing the genre on its head. Russell Crowe appears every bit the bruiser as hired thug Jackson, while Gosling definitely shows his comedic side in a completely over the top performance as March.
Black clearly hasn’t skimped on the grit and blood with The Nice Guys, and has also assembled a terrific supporting cast including Matt Bomer as a sociopathic mafia hitman, and Kim Basinger as a determined DA whose guarding more secrets than she’s letting on.
The Nice Guys will be an absolute riot when it’s released in cinemas on May 20, 2016 in the US, May 26, 2016 in Australia and New Zealand, and on June 3, 2016 in the UK.
