Ryan Phillippe is getting behind the gun as cult action character Bob Lee Swagger, in a television adaptation of Shooter.
As reported by Variety, Phillippe has been cast as the former Marine Corps sniper who is the subject of numerous books by author Stephen Hunter, and was the central character of the 2007 film of the same name where he was portrayed by Mark Wahlberg.
Whalberg will stay on as an executive producer this time, but the action is all on Phillippe who, as Bob Lee, is called back out of retirement by his former commanding officer Isaac Johnson (Omar Epps), who is now working as a Secret Service agent to oversee the protection of the President. But then everything goes wrong, and Bob Lee is forced to go on the run, and must prove his innocence.
According to Jackie de Crinis, EVP of Original Programming for USA Network, Shooter is “an uncompromising exploration of the definition and evolution of a hero. The conspiracy and drama that unfolded throughout the first hour had us completely immersed, and we look forward to more.”
The pilot has now been picked up for series, but no release date has been set.
