Rising cinema auteur Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) has returned to the big screen with a heartfelt and incredibly ambitious story in Midnight Special.
After his eight year old son reveals supernatural powers, desperate father, Roy (Michael Shannon), enlists the help of his best friend, Lucas (J0el Edgerton), and his ex-wife Sarah (Kirsten Dunst), to help protect his son from a violent and extreme religious sect, led by the dangerous and charismatic Calvin Meyer (Sam Shepard). Also sent to capture them is a government task force led by the committed and focused Agent Paul Sevier (Adam Driver).
Nichols has drawn inspiration from the science-fiction flicks of the 1980s, particularly John Carpenter’s work on 1984’s Starman, providing a film that’s a solid blend of hardline emotional drama and thrilling science fiction. Michael Shannon is once again set to give a committed performance, in a role that’s sure to surprise and excite fans.
Midnight Special is a film experience that audiences should definitely be lining up for when it’s released on March 18 in the US and April 8 in the UK.
