Our Oscar winner predictions for 2016

The biggest night in Hollywood is only days away with a slew of fantastic nominees and an hilarious host ready to celebrate the best in film. While the competition is stiff this year and arguments could be made in favour of every nominee, we’ve figured out the front runner in each category in terms of who is most likely to take home that highly coveted award.

Best Picture

The Revenant

Why? The Big Short, Spotlight, and The Revenant are all obvious front runners but picking the winner has been a tough one. It could go any way given the awards that all three of the films have reaped recently with The Big Short taking the PGA for best film and Spotlight winning scoring at both the SAG and WGA. However, The Revenant has took home the big prize at this year’s Golden Globes and is nominated for an incredible 12 awards at this year’s Oscars, which is why its our top pick…marginally.

Actor in a Leading Role

Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant

Why? DiCaprio has been winning big at every major awards show this season thanks to his raw performance and punishing dedication to his role. The Academy also tends to favour actors who undergo physical transformations or suffer for their craft which DiCaprio has certainly done.

Actress in a Leading Role

Brie Larson, Room

Why? Larson has taken Hollywood by storm thanks to her incredible performance in an emotionally draining yet heartwarming film. Winning most major awards this season including the Golden Globes makes her a definitive favourite.

Actor in a Supporting Role

Sylvester Stallone, Creed

Why? This isn’t a certainty like the Best Actor and Best actress categories given the stiff competition but since Hollywood loves an underdog and Rocky Balboa ticks all the boxes.

Actress in a Supporting Role

Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl

Why? Thanks to two outstanding performances in 2015 (The Danish Girl and Ex Machina) Vikander is likely to take home the prize. Rooney Mara would be a welcome surprise too for her emotive performance in Carol.
