We were wishing, hoping, thinking and praying on this, and now it looks like our dreams have come true: the original mean girl is back.
Sarah Michelle Gellar has confirmed via Instagram that she will be returning to the role of high society queen bee Kathryn Merteuil in the Cruel Intentions television series, which will explore the sordid world that was once Merteuil’s playground.
#throwbackthursday (a bit early in Los Angeles) this picture was taken on the eve of production on the original #cruelintentions. Its me #rogerkumble (director) and #nealmoritz (exec producer) and the other is a picture of us now on the eve of production on the new #cruelintentions. That’s right “everybody loves me, and I intend to keep it that way” #kathrynmerteuil is back!!! I am happy to say that I will be joining them (and @nbctv ) on the new #Crueltv
Set seventeen years after the death of upper east side bad boy Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe), the new series will follow 16-year-old Bash Casey (Taylor John Smith), the son of Sebastian and Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), who, after discovering the truth about his father in a hidden journal, moves from small-town Kansas to San Francisco, where he joins a swanky prep school and has to reckon with his step-aunt Kathryn, who is fighting for control of a big corporation.
We couldn’t be more excited for this wicked new series, especially now that Gellar is back in the mix. It will certainly be interesting to see how Kathryn has fared in the years following Sebastian’s death, given the scrutiny and backlash she would have faced after his funeral. Bash better watch out…he doesn’t know who he’s dealing with.
