In 1959, Ben–Hur captivated audiences and established itself as one of MGM’s greatest cinematic achievements, and ever since the remake was announced, many were wary about how one of Hollywood’s most famous epics could be given new life. However, after seeing the bold first trailer, we have a feeling that fans, old and young, will see something magical in this.
Ben-Hur tells the story of Jewish nobleman Judah Ben Hur (Jack Huston), who is betrayed by his childhood best friend Messala (Toby Kebbell), and sentenced to slavery. However, after surviving a harrowing five years, Ben Hur emerges in a heroic and daring attempt for revenge.
Director Timur Bekmambetov looks to be throwing audiences head-first into the fire, offering a high-stakes thrill ride that’ll push its characters to their limits. The legendary chariot scene from the 1959 film also looks to have been given new life in the remake, and would surely make William Wyler proud.
Ben Hur is a story for the ages, and audiences will find themselves gripping their seats when the adrenaline-charged adaptation finds its way into cinemas on August 12 in the US and UK, and on August 18 in Australia and New Zealand.
