We’re counting the days until Elodie Yung is unleashed upon the world as the deadly Elektra Natchios in season two of Daredevil. To celebrate the entrance of this bold and deadly character, we’re breaking down our five favorite ninjas who have dominated the big screen.
5. Haru – Beverly Hills Ninja
You can’t have a greatest ninja list without mentioning Chris Farley’s over-the-top performance as the comedic Haru in Beverly Hills Ninja. This so-called ‘chosen one’ fails more times than you can count, but his loyalty to his brother Gobei (Robin Shou), and desire to protect the beautiful Alison Page (Nicollette Sheridan), never lets him down.
4. Raizo – Ninja Assassin
What happens when you take the mind of the Wachowskis and mix in neo-noir spy cool, and katana blades? Well, you get the non-stop action film Ninja Assassin, and a wickedly cool performance from South Korean superstar Rain. Raised from birth to be a lethal killing machine, Raizo finds himself on his own clan’s death list, and is hunted to the ends of the earth. But he’s not going to just lay down without a fight, which leads to some epic showdowns.
3. Azumi – Azumi
When it comes to deadly skills, there’s no cooler ninja than the lethally gifted Azumi (Aya Ueto). Adapted from the cult manga series by Yu Koyama, Azumi presents a young woman who is twisted and used by the male dominated world around her, and responds in kind with her sword. Packed with lashings of blood, and an unprecedented battle scene where she takes on 200 men, Azumi is one ninja not to be messed with.
2. Snake Eyes – G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra/G.I. Joe: Retaliation
It doesn’t get any more badass than the G.I. Joe’s lethal ninjitsu and stealth expert Snake Eyes. Never seen without his trademark mask, this is the man you want at your side when everything goes to hell. An acclaimed martial artist and stuntman, Ray Park gave a brilliantly uncompromising performance. And in a cool bit of trivia, Elektra herself, Elodie Yung, served as Snake Eye’s apprentice, Jinx, in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. We’re thinking there’s a strong possibility that she picked up some sweet tips along the way.
1. Michelangelo – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
But for our favorite Ninja, there is no one better than the Ninja Turtles’ wise-cracking resident comedian, skateboarder and pizza connoisseur, Michelangelo. Mikey is the heart and soul of this resident batch of anthropomorphic heroes, and jumps into every fight swinging his nunchucks and cracking jokes along the way.
