Hollywood legend Oliver Stone is always up for something controversial, and now he’s bringing the story of government whistleblower Edward Snowden to the big screen in the pulse pounding thriller Snowden.
After he fails to enter the United States Army Special Forces training programme, gifted young programmer Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) volunteers to serve his country by working for the NSA and CIA. But what he discovers makes him question everything he’s ever believed in, and leads to the biggest leak in national security history.
Stone tackles the story of Snowden head on and anchors it with a brilliant performance from Joseph Gordon-Levitt. While Snowden has become a polarising figure for many, with some seeing him as a hero and others a traitor, Stone appears to have focused on the man himself, and the extraordinary circumstances that he was caught up in.
In addition to Levitt, Stone has filled his supporting cast with some of the best performers working today including Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Melissa Leo, Timothy Olyphant, Scott Eastwood and Nicolas Cage as a high ranking CIA official.
For those seeking a gripping thrill ride they’ll certainly get their money’s worth when Snowden is released in cinemas on September 16 in the US and UK.
