Fans have been quite vocal about their desire for a Black Widow standalone film, and according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, that might just become a reality.
In an exclusive interview with Deadline, the ultimate figurehead at Marvel was asked if characters like Hawkeye, Black Widow and Falcon were destined for solo movies down the line. In his reply, Feige confirmed “Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow.”
When asked to expand on his choice, Feige replied, “We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand-alone franchise.”
Though it’s encouraging that Marvel and Feige believe in Black Widow’s ability to carry a film, we’re not going to get too excited yet. Words don’t mean much in Hollywood, but we have faith that the studio will recognise the enormous potential in a Black Widow standalone film, and get the ball rolling sooner rather than later.
Making a commitment to another female-led Marvel film would be huge for the studio, and possibly help soothe the anger it caused after pushing back the date of Captain Marvel from July 2018 to November 2018.
In the meantime we’ll just have to wait until Avengers: Infinity Wars — Part 1 (2018) to see Natasha Romanoff in action again.
