Rising star John Boyega officially took to Twitter today to confirm his involvement in Steven S. DeKnight’s upcoming Pacific Rim sequel, tentatively titled Pacific Rim: Maelstorm.
I'll be taking on the Pacific Rim franchise with Steven S.Deknight directing. Very excited!

Expanding on the story, Deadline zeroed in on the fact that Boyega will be portraying the son of Idris Elba’s no-nonsense Jaeger Field Marshall Stacker Pentecost, as well as confirming that original Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro will be attached to the project as a producer and creative consultant.
Boyega has already proven himself to be a bankable rising star, but he’s stepping into the big leagues now as he’ll be following in the footsteps of both Idris Elba and Stacker Pentecost, an actor and character that demand huge respect. This should provide plenty of drama for Boyega’s yet un-named character, especially in relation to the idea that his was an absentee father who obviously put duty ahead of his son. Rumors are also circling that Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam may return as ace Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket, which could set up some awesome mentor scenes.
Although there’s no news on whether Rinko Kikuchi will return as Mako Mori, her presence could also offer some terrific drama and fervent jealousy on behalf of Boyega’s character, as Mori was essentially Pentecost’s ‘daughter’, and her inclusion in the original could more than likely have left the younger Pentecost with a chip on his shoulder.
On Boyega’s casting Del Toro commented, “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The world saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
We’re certainly excited to see where Boyega and DeKnight take the franchise, and are looking forward to more Jaegers and even bigger Kaijus in the future!
