Nerdy characters aren’t just reserved for teen flicks reliant on stereotypes. In fact, many of our favourite movies feature characters you might not even have thought of as nerds. Here’s our top eight:
1. Brian Johnson, The Breakfast Club
The heart and soul of The Breakfast Club was undoubtedly Anthony Michael Hall’s Brian Johnson — an underappreciated and troubled ‘geeky’ character who demanded the audience’s respect.
2. Hermione Granger, Harry Potter
A genius, skilled witch and incredible friend, Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) made being an excellent student cool, particularly when her skills came in handy outside the classroom. She’s a role model and definitely one of our all-time favourite movie nerds.
3. Tony Stark, Iron Man 1, 2, 3, The Avengers films and Captain America: Civil War
Who said being a nerd couldn’t look good? Robert Downey Jr. made quite the career comeback as the slick, rich and cool Tony Stark in Jon Favreau’s 2008 action film Iron Man, and his intelligence and ingenuity made him all the more enduring.
4. Josie Geller, Never Been Kissed
Drew Barrymore made this former high-school nerd one of the most relatable, sweet and funny characters we’ve ever seen. Intelligent and talented but with plenty of emotional scars from her high school days, Josie eventually found love with someone who appreciated her for who she really was.
5. Indiana Jones, Indiana Jones film series
A professor of archaeology and noble treasure hunter with a fear of snakes, Indiana Jones is proof that having hobbies and a healthy passion can be good for the soul (especially when they take you out of the library).
6. Kevin Gnapoor, Mean Girls
This math enthusiast/badass MC straight up stole the show in Mean Girls. Played by Rajiv Surendra, Kevin Gnapoor was smart, confident and knew what he wanted. Also, he said ‘don’t let the haters stop you from doing your thang.’
7. Richard Wang aka Data, The Goonies
Jonathan Ke Quan played this smart, quick and a promising inventor who ended up saving the rest of the Goonies on more than one occasion. Equipped with a range of gadgets, Data is the kind of friend you want to have around in a sticky situation.
8. Clarice Starling, The Silence of the Lambs
This intelligent, ambitious character (played by Jodie Foster) literally stared evil right in the face. A top student at the FBI academy, Starling boasted a double major in psychology and criminology, and her experience, passion and smarts led to her locating Buffalo Bill.
