Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard play a dangerous game in ‘Allied’
Cinema legend Robert Zemeckis showcases the danger of WWII in his new high-stakes thriller Allied, which has just released its first trailer.
In 1942, American assassin Max Vartan is sent on assignment to kill a Nazi officer in Casablanca, but upon arriving in the exotic city he falls madly in love with Marianne Beausejour, a French Resistance spy who is also there to kill the same man.
With Allied, Zemeckis appears to have recalled the daring romantic war dramas of the 1940s such as Casablanca and Passage to Marseille, and Pitt is clearly drawing on Humphrey Bogart as a character reference for his American assassin Max Vartan. Cotillard too appears to showcase a noir femme fatale charisma that has been absent from the screen for some time, and I’m sure Veronica Lake and Lauren Bacall would be impressed by her intensity.
The production values look amazing, with authentic period costuming and set direction that recalls the glamour of the era, as well as the jeopardy that propelled the war years forward. This attention to detail, coupled with the pairing of Pitt and Cotillard, will make Allied one of this year’s most memorable watches.
Allied will be released in cinemas on November 22 in New Zealand and Australia and on November 23 in the US and UK.
