Paramount Pictures has something truly special on its slate if the first trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival is any indication.
Based on the short story Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang, Arrival brings together themes of human relationships and determinism, and presents three complex characters experiencing something way out of their depths.
Following the appearance of mysterious alien spaceships across the globe, the world’s governments send an elite scientific team to investigate the phenomenon which includes linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams), mathematician Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) and Army Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker). But the what they find is beyond their wildest understanding.
With its release date set for mid 2017, Arrival is poised to be next summer’s breakout blockbuster, and will be a refreshing watch for audiences after something outside of the superhero world. Director Denis Villeneuve has previously tackled heavy fare like Prisoners and Sicaro, and with a high-concept film like Arrival now under his belt, we get the feeling he’s headed towards a long and fruitful career.
Arrival is due in cinemas on July 21, 2017 in the US and on July 24, 2017 in New Zealand and Australia.
