Margaret Atwood fans have every reason to be excited with Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of the author’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale set to air early next year, and the announcement that Netflix is adapting another Atwood novel, Alias Grace.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, True Blood and Roots star Anna Paquin is set to star in the role of Nancy Montgomery, alongside Sarah Gadon and Zachary Levi in the Netflix adaptation.
Written and produced by the extremely talented Sarah Polley (Away From Her), the six-hour miniseries is based on the true story of Grace Marks (Gadon), an Irish immigrant and servant who, along with a fellow servant, James McDermott, was convicted of murdering their employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery, in 1843.
The haunting true story saw Marks being convicted and committed to an asylum before eventually being pardoned 30 years later. McDermott on the other hand, was convicted and hanged for his part in the crimes.
There’s no doubt that Alias Grace will prove to be a gripping watch, especially with the introduction of a fictional doctor, Simon Jordan, who researches the case and begins a romance with Marks. It’s a twist we cant wait to see unfold.
