She’s one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars, so it’s no wonder Marvel wanted Zendaya to play opposite Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Up until recently Zendaya’s role was initially thought to be a character named Michelle, but The Wrap revealed just yesterday that the secret role is in fact Peter Parker’s famous love interest Mary Jane Watson. While many fans rejoiced at the news, there were unfortunately some who took issue with the fact that a woman of colour would be playing a character who has always been drawn as white with red hair. This of course, is nuts.

Even Dan Slott, the current writer of The Amazing Spider-Man comics, has the following to say about the nay-sayers.

It’s a real shame that Slott even had to speak up, considering we live in 2016. But Hollywood hasn’t exactly been kind to women of colour, and rarely consider them as viable options for love interests. Let’s hope change comes fast. We’re certainly all for Zendaya as Mary Jane: she’s talented, beautiful inside and out, and the perfect match for Tom Holland.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released in cinemas in the US and UK next year on July 7, 2017.
