While the superhero movie has mainly been an American ideal, the genre’s natural heroism and drive has lead to many different cultures adopting them for their own purpose. Now Russian filmmaker Sarik Andreasyan has put his own spin on classic superhero stereotypes in his big budget action film Guardians.
Originally titled Zaschitniki in its native Russian, Guardians follows a group of Cold War era superheroes who were the subject of genetic experimentation and locked away for decades. But when a madman threatens both Moscow and the world with his robotic army, this rebel superhero group is called into action to spearhead an attack to stop him.
Guardians is absolute required watching for any fan of the superhero genre, and it’s terrific to see a new twist on such a dominant media concept at the moment.
