Next year’s Academy Awards will be a hotbed of competition, and Amma Asante’s A United Kingdom could be leading the race thanks to two stunning performances from David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike.
The film follows the true life story of Sir Seretse Khama (Oyelowo), the royal heir of Bechuanaland (now present-day Botswana) who fell in love with English lady Ruth Williams (Pike), eventually marrying her. But their love for each other caused mass un-popularity, and threatened to destroy the Apartheid system that the British Government had imposed in Bechuanaland.
With two of today’s best performers giving their all to the production, we’re sensing that A United Kingdom could be in the run for Academy gold next year.
A United Kingdom will get its world premiere at TIFF, before making its way into cinemas on November 25.
