Following the casting of Joe Manganiello as lead villain Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s future Batman movie, actor Ryan Potter has made his intentions known that he wants to portray Tim Drake, the third Robin, in any future DC Cinematic Universe adaptations.
Along with reaching out to Ben Affleck, Warner Brothers and DC Comics on Twitter, Potter has also produced a one minute concept fight scene video to show off his considerably skills.
While comic book fans are continually calling for diverse representations of classic characters (Potter is of Asian-American descent), what strikes me is Potter’s determination and passion to portray Tim Drake. Not only did he directly reach out to Affleck, but he also invested his own time and money to showcase that he could handle any strenuous fight scenes.
Potter’s desire is also comparable with the characterisation of Drake as well. While previous Robin’s such as Dick Grayson and Jason Todd were caught in the shadow of Bruce Wayne’s Batman, Drake never sought to be another Dark Knight, but only ever intended to serve the people of Gotham as Robin.
Analysing the video, it’s pretty clear that Potter has some epic martial arts moves, and I couldn’t help but think of him as this young, energetic Bruce Lee-type with his striking screen presence and raw energy. His agility and speed would also provide a contrast to Affleck’s powerhouse brawler combat style, making for great viewing on screen.
It’s still early days for Affleck’s Batman movie, and whether Tim Drake will ever make it to the big screen remains to be seen, but I’d be very happy to see someone as skilled and passionate as Potter take on the Boy Wonder and fight alongside the Dark Knight.
