Bruce Lee brought martial arts to America, and in doing so changed the very nature of both action cinema and American society. Now the story of the man behind the legend is coming to the screen in George Nolfi’s Birth of the Dragon.
Birth of the Dragon follows the story of young wanderer Steve McKee (Billy Magnussen), who finds himself drawn to the charismatic martial arts fighter Bruce Lee (Philip Ng). As McKee learns more about the art of Kung Fu from Lee, he soon becomes a witness to an immortal fight that would pit Lee against martial arts Grandmaster Wong Jack Man (Xia Yu).
A combination of fact and fiction, Birth of the Dragon is a film that has deliberately sought to show a different side of martial arts superstar Bruce Lee, and focuses on when he was still young and untested, and only beginning to develop his signature style. Hong Kong cinema veteran Philip Ng makes his American debut as Lee, and his effort to fully realise Lee’s life on screen is impressive.
