A brand new trailer for Zhang Yimou’s The Great Wall has just been released, and gives audiences a good taste of the horrors that await our heroes.
Starring Matt Damon, Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Zhang Hanyu, Williem Dafoe, Andy Lau, Junkai Wang, Eddie Peng, and Lu Hun, the film tells a fictional story about why the Great Wall of China was constructed, and finds an army battling to keep out terrifying beasts that threaten the safety of China and the world.
While the trailer looks incredible, it certainly hasn’t been smooth sailing during the film’s marketing campaign so far, with many arguing that The Great Wall is yet another example of the white saviour trope. However, I am elated that a film with a primarily Chinese cast (and a talented one at that) will gain worldwide recognition. Hopefully the film concentrates just as much on the Chinese heroes as it does on Damon’s character.
The Great Wall will be released in China sometime this December before reaching New Zealand and Australia on February 16, 2017 and the US and UK on February 17, 2017.
