The team behind Disney’s ‘Moana’ made admirable efforts to understand Polynesian culture
It looks like the geniuses behind Disney’s Moana took the research aspect of their job pretty seriously, having travelled to the Pacific Islands to better understand the traditions and beliefs of the people.
In a brand new featurette, the cast and crew discuss their discoveries, and how they helped craft the story of Moana.
“Writing songs for the movie with Opetaia and Mark Mancina, we drew upon the Pacific Island’s rich musical culture. The diversity of music that is part of the world formed what I think makes a great score,” commented songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Dwayne Johnson, who voices the demi god Maui, also weighed in on the significance of bringing the story to life. “This is the opportunity to show my culture to the world. I really think they’ve made something special,” he says.
Moana will be released on November 23 in the US, and on December 26 in New Zealand and Australia.
