Margaret Atwood’s seminal science fiction story, The Handmaid’s Tale, is headed to Hulu in a brand new series, and judging from the latest teaser it will definitely send shivers down your spine.
Here’s the synopsis:
Set in a far off dystopian America, a young woman who is known only as Offred (Elizabeth Moss) finds herself at the mercy of a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship and is forced to serve as a concubine to one of the regimes leading commanders.
The teaser is blunt and to the point, with series star Elizabeth Moss appearing as a wild-eyed and slightly crazed women who has been pushed to her limits. Joining Moss in this intriguing new series are Joseph Fiennes as Offred’s owner who is known only as The Commander, Yvonne Strahovski as The Commander’s wife Serena Joy, and Alexis Bledel as Offred’s companion Ofglen.
A Handmaid’s Tale will definitely test audiences thanks to subtle themes of control, religious extremism and the place of class and gender. It’s also another step by Hulu to follow in the footsteps of their more challenging original programming, that began with last year’s 10.22.63.
A Handmaid’s Tale is set to premiere on April 26.
