Christian Bale has been absent from the big screen for some time now, but his newest project, Hostiles, looks like a very worthy return to form for the megastar.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Bitter and weary after a long posting, U.S. Cavalry officer Captain Joseph J. Blocker (Bale) is charged by his superiors to lead a dying war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back to their ancestral home deep in the heart of the savage Cheyenne tribal lands.
Check out the new trailer below:
Hostiles has the makings of a modern Unforgiven, and Bale appears to give a commanding and sombre performance as the world weary Blocker. While his exterior may seem calm, you can’t help but sense that there’s an uncontrollable violence that is just waiting to erupt from beneath the surface.
Bale has re-teamed again with former collaborator Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace, Black Mass) for this one, and Hostiles looks like perfect material for Cooper’s hard-edged sensibilities. In addition to Bale, Cooper has packed out the supporting cast with a stellar list of all-stars which includes Rosamund Pike as suicidal war widow Rosemary Quaid, Ben Foster as skeevy criminal Philip Wills and the legendary Wes Studi as Blocker’s charge Yellow Hawk.
Hostiles will be released later this year and could well be one to look out for come Oscar season.
