‘The New Mutants’ promises a horrific rollercoaster of mutant terror

While many of us would see mutant powers as some very cool to possess, director Josh Boone is taking the opposite approach with The New Mutants. The director casts aside any notion of coolness or glamour and instead the idea of mutant abilities is something that incites fear and absolute terror.

Check out the new trailer below:

Here’s the synopsis:

Five young mutants, who are held against their will in a secret laboratory discover they are being experimented upon and stage an escape. And in doing so have to overcome their past sins and worst fears.

The New Mutants looks like it is ready to seriously mix-up the superhero genre. This is one comic book cocktail that certainly has a hard shot of horror thrown into it, and the first trailer is packed out with plenty of horrifying footage. From screaming walls to sadistic medical experimentation, Boone has packed out his latest film with all the calling cards of the best horror films.

In watching the trailer I felt a deep sense of dread build up inside of me and was reminded of classic horror movies such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and Carrie. Boone has made great use of the idea of ‘puberty as horror’ motif, and his young cast encounter some truly terrifying things as they attempt to escape their prison. Forget about Xavier’s School for the Gifted this time, because for these five mutants Professor X ain’t there to help.

The casting in The New Mutants is absolutely top notch and includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot and Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage. All of these young performers give very convincing portrayals of their characters and you can feel how freaked out they are at having awoken in the asylum from hell and having learnt that they’re mutants.

A haunting rendition of Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ gives the trailer an added dose of tension and The New Mutants will have some seriously creepy effects that are sure to have audience members jumping out of their chairs!

The New Mutants looks like one hell of an intriguing film and is definitely a must watch! It will be released next year on August 1, 2019.
