In a casting announcement that we did not see coming, Chuck star Zachary Levi has been confirmed to take on the role of the happy go’lucky superhero Captain Marvel also known as Shazam, in the upcoming 2019 DC Comics adaptation Shazam!.
Levi’s casting was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, and will see him working alongside director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out).
While this isn’t Levi’s first turn as a superhero, as he previously portrayed Fandral the Dashing in Marvel Studio’s Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok, the character of Captain Marvel presents an all-around different character for the actor.
The character of Captain Marvel/Shazam is, in fact, the alter-ego of 10-year-old Billy Batson, who after encountering an ancient magician is given the vast superpowers of a group of ancient legends including Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury. But in a light-hearted touch, Billy still retains his 10-year-old sensibilities as Captain Marvel/Shazam which very often leads to plenty of off-beat comedic moments.
Levi’s casting is a particular wildcard choice for the character with the actor beating out fellow performers including John Cena, Derek Theler, Zane Holtz and Billy Magnussen for the role. I personally align Levi’s casting to the likes of Paul Rudd’s casting as Ant-Man, where not only do you get a capable performer, but also the presence of a gifted comedian.
I must say that Levi will no-doubt be headed straight to the weights room to buff-up for the role as he’ll have to take on the massive force of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, which will see the superstar cast in his first ever villain role.
Shazam will offer plenty of quirkiness to the expanding DC Cinematic Universe and will provide plenty of stellar superhero action when it reaches cinemas in late 2019.
