Rooney Mara is an actress who continues to shine with each new role and who has made it her life’s work to accept demanding performances that really push her forward as an actress. Her role in the biblical drama Mary Magdalene is one such role as Mara takes on the polarising character of Mary Magdalene and works to express the very humanity that lies at her core.
The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.
Mary Magdalene is a touching portrait of the connection between two people who changed humanity forever in the form of Mary and Jesus (Phoenix). Both Mara and Phoenix really commit to their roles and director Garth Davis (Lion) explores unseen elements of their characters and stories showing Phoenix’s Jesus as a mellow, analytical man who is carrying the world on his shoulders, with Mary as someone who he comes to value for her openness and willingness to listen to him.
Davis also captures the film with beautiful cinematography and clarity that relies on natural light and a colour palette of rich earthy tones.
Mary Magdalene is a strong drama that will most definitely move you as an audience member and it will be released in cinemas on March 29.
