Henry Cavill continues to move from strength to strength and news broke that he has now been cast in the lead role of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s highly anticipated fantasy series The Witcher, which will adapt the cult fantasy novels that were made into the extremely popular video game, in an exciting new series.

Variety confirmed Cavill’s casting, and it’s exciting news in regards to how serious Netflix are treating this new adaptation. Not only is Cavill a blockbuster star with performances in the likes of Man of Steel, Justice League and the recently released Mission: Impossible – Fallout, but he himself is a massive gamer and this is a serious passion project for him.

The Witcher’s showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich confirmed that Cavill was indeed the front runner for the role and that it was his passion for both the original source novels, which he is well versed in, along with his love of the game series that made him a perfect fit.

On his casting Hissrich said, “he was my first meeting. I didn’t have writers or scripts yet – just a greenlight and a lot of passion. That was four months ago, and I’ve never forgotten the passion he brought. He IS Geralt. He always has been.”

Cavill, who is known for his tongue-in-cheek humor on his own Instagram channel, announced his casting with a solid wink at fans:

As for the casting of Geralt, Cavill is a great choice and not only has the physical presence and athletic ability to portray the brooding monster hunter but has shown a wide cinematic range from stalwart heroes like Superman to more menacing antagonists such as his recent performance as August Walker in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. This, plus his passion for the project, and the promise of an 8-episode first season from Netflix, means that we can expect plenty of exciting developments ahead with The Witcher.

The Witcher takes place in a fictional world known as The Continent and follows the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, as he struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together and put an end to the evils that beset it.

We’ll still have to wait a while for the series to drop but this is a great start to what will be an awesome new series to get hyped for.
